Public Safety Advisory: Timely Warning – Assault

Posted: 4/30/2025 - 12:02 AM

Dear Members of the Drexel Community,

Drexel Police are advising the campus community of a shooting incident that occurred on April 28 at 12:31 a.m. in the area of 33rd Street and Powelton Avenue. An individual inside D.P. Dough, located at 3235 Powelton, engaged in an altercation with other individuals inside the establishment. After the individuals left the establishment, the suspect exited the building and began shooting at them in the 300 Block of N. 33rd Street. Individuals from that group returned fire. No injuries were reported.

Drexel Police were patrolling the area as the incident unfolded and immediately made multiple arrests. Several firearms were recovered, and charges are pending.

Philadelphia Police and Drexel Police are investigating the incident. Although it is believed to be an isolated incident related to an ongoing dispute among those involved, Drexel Police will be increasing patrols in the area.

Drexel Public Safety provides the following general information about preventing and reporting an aggravated assault in our community:

If you are the victim of an aggravated assault

  • Seek medical attention, as needed.
  • Immediately report it to the Drexel Police Department by calling 215.895.2222 or Philadelphia Police by calling 9-1-1.
  • Consider contacting confidential campus support resources. We know that experiencing or witnessing violence has a direct impact on mental well-being. Our Student Counseling Center (counsel@drexel.edu) and Employee Assistance Program (888.881.5462) are always available and have many resources to help us cope with difficult experiences.
  • Drexel Public Safety’s Victim Support Coordinator is also available to help (215.895.6921, als528@drexel.edu).

To help reduce the risk of being the victim of an aggravated assault

  • Be aware of your personal space to allow yourself time to react.
  • Disengage when possible and get to a place of safety.
  • Consider signing up for Drexel Public Safety’s self-protection class, SAFE, which aims to give Drexel students, faculty and staff the practical skills, resources and knowledge they can use to increase their personal safety and protect themselves in an unsafe situation. The program focuses on mindset, self-awareness, techniques that could assist in the event of a physical assault, and information on how to report incidents and any safety concerns. Information about the class and how to register is posted on Public Safety’s website.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to the Drexel University Police Department by calling 215.895.2222 or the Philadelphia Police Department by calling 9-1-1.
  • Members of the Drexel community may call Public Safety for a walking escort at 215.895.2222 or use the Drexel Guardian app
  • Whenever possible, travel well-lit, busy routes. Avoid walking or parking in shadowed areas.
  • Have your keys in your hand as you approach your door.
  • Know the location of Campus Emergency Telephones on your routes to and from campus destinations.

Your efforts to stay well-informed and take preventive action will help in maintaining the safest possible environment on Drexel’s campuses. Police are reminding everyone to be aware of their surroundings, to not have cell phones and other valuables visible and to walk with others when possible.

Additional crime prevention and awareness tips can be found on Public Safety’s website.

What Is This Notice?

The Clery Act requires institutions of higher education to assess certain crimes and issue a timely warning when a crime poses a serious or on-going threat to the campus community, faculty, staff, and/or visitors. Timely warnings are intended to prevent similar crimes and to provide information that will assist community members in protecting themselves. Drexel Public Safety makes the decision to issue a timely warning notice on a case-by-case basis for the following crimes: homicide, sex offenses (rape, fondling, incest and statutory rape), robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and hate crimes, as defined by the Clery Act.
