Computing for Clothing

When I began my first year at Drexel, I was stunned to find myself excelling in and enjoying math. After trying out a computer science course at the recommendation of my favorite math professor, I felt like I finally found what clicked. So during my second year, with the support of my academic advisor, I began to build a plan of study for a major in computer science. I was intimidated at times by the heavy course load and general difficulty I perceived to be associated with a computing degree, but found supportive professors, friends, and guidance along the way.

It's incredibly rewarding to see my code go into production and read reviews from real users complementing features I've worked on.

Today, I'm at my second co-op, working as a software engineer at Nuuly. This position (which I applied to through Drexel's co-op database) allows me to blend my many interests and diverse background while doing what I now love — coding and problem solving. Nuuly provides a more sustainable approach to fashion by allowing users to rent brand-name clothing and return it every month. As a backend software engineer on the customer experience services team, I deliver and deploy code that ensures users have an enjoyable, easy experience while renting their Nuuly.

I've been welcomed by a wonderful development team who allow me to take problems under my own control as much as I see fit, but are always around to support me when I'm stuck. Lately, I've worked on projects like automating refunds for users pausing or canceling orders and coding operations to assign users to Nuuly's new second distribution center. All the while, I'm working right alongside experienced full-time engineers who truly value my input on a beautiful campus in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. It's incredibly rewarding to see my code go into production and read reviews from real users complementing features I've worked on.

Drexel has provided me with not only this opportunity I've loved, but also the support and confidence I need to see myself as an engineer. As a woman with a dance background and a fear of all things STEM, I'm shocked and proud to be programming essential services for a company I love with over 150,000 subscribers. As thrilled as I am to get back to my classes at CCI, I'm sad to be leaving this amazing co-op behind.
