Drexel man in front of a daycare banner

When I needed an idea for my qualitative research project at Drexel University, I didn't have to look far. I simply sat on my front steps in South Philly and observed a bare wall at the Watch Us Grow Learning Center. The plain wall inspired me to design a 4x6-foot banner that not only beautified the daycare center but also incorporated elements of Drexel University and my own journey in education. The project wasn't just about aesthetics. It symbolized my commitment to positively impacting the world around me, an effort that began after a life-changing moment in 2014.

As we worked together, I felt a sense of community and purpose that aligned perfectly with my educational journey.

Following a medical error as a senior radiation therapist at Jefferson Hospital, I vowed to ensure such mistakes never happened again. This commitment pushed me to research, write, lecture, and eventually earn a master's degree from Widener University. But my desire for a broader impact drove me to pursue my doctorate at Drexel University.

Creating the banner was a collaborative effort with daycare operator Bernisha Salmond and my wife. As we worked together, I felt a sense of community and purpose that aligned perfectly with my educational journey. It was a small gesture, but I hope it serves as a beacon of kindness and inspiration for everyone who sees it.

To me, education is about more than personal growth; it's about contributing to something greater. I like to think that maybe one day, the banner will inspire a parent or child to do something remarkable. Because every small gesture counts.
